Every car guy/ gal has that one.  Their Unicorn, the one that made them fall in love with cars in the first place.  Anybody that knows me knows what mine is.  I have always had a thing for Chrysler cars from the mid-late 50s.  They are, in my opinon, some of the most beautiful designs, and in some cases, most ridiculous one to have come out of Detroit.  I fell in love with the 1957-58 Plymouths first, others have followed in the "interesting" category, but none have ever held the same place in my heart. When I was a kid, my dad and I used to see one (a '57 Fury) parked downtown.  The fins were as tall as me.  I remember him pointing through the window, explaining how the push-button drive worked.  My grandfather had a '57 Belvedere 4dr Sport Sedan.  To this day, the man still talks about the car, calling it "the favorite" of all that he has owned.  So, I made up my mind to not back down, to sell the beetle, put it on the classifieds, sold it the same day, and the very same day (after a year of searching, keep in mind) was trolling through some google images, came across a pic of a grey and white Savoy that, when i opened it, was an old classified ad attached to an expired ebay listing.  I called the guy's phone number, he said that he still had the car, and a deal was made.  He bought the car from the estate of a woman who had passed away.  It had been stored in a detatched one-car garage out behind her 3- story Victorian home for years.  After he bought it, he got it running, and a friend helped him do a buch of ding-filling work (the car looks different now, it has 12 shades of primer spray all over it)  I bought the car with it's 88k og miles and it left Rio Grande, NJ today at lunchtime and will be here sometime tomorrow.

For 25 years I have waited, but now it's time to shut up and just show the pics from the day of discovery....

Now she's not quite as pretty.  The previous owner had been doing a bunch of body work, disassembly, etc... Plans are to get her in one quick color of primer for the spring/summer/fall and then do the body work right over the winter time.  I told David that i would probably take it apart now and do it, and i thought he was gonna smack me.  He proceeded to remind me how long i had waited, suggested i might like to drive it around for a while first.  I think i like his idea better.   Cool

The specs are:
1957 Plymouth Savoy 4dr sedan
optional "Fury 301" V8 engine
optional push-button controlled 2-speed Powerflite Transmission
optional AM radio (comes on, but no antenna, so no sound)

The Savoy was the mid-range in Plymouth's Line for 1957.  The 4 door Savoy was in fact the most popular model sold that year.  No rarer than rare options, just a nice, middle class kinda car like i would have bought then myself.

the first thing i want to do when it gets here and i can make sure it's good to go is to pick up my grandfather and take him for a little ride.   Cool

Pretty slick... but you'll have to keep begging for the exception  Grin Grin Grin

Get it rolling and driving first. Every good car has a "before I got it where I wanted it but still loved driving it" period. Live it up cause once its all pretty you won't want to hurt it!

Evidently you missed that part, Nick... It runs and drives right now.   Grin

I am gonna shoot a primer coat on the body for now, but only intend to take it apart, clean up the little bits and pieces, re-seal the engine, and paint the body exterior, then put it back together.  Maybe someday it will get the full-on resto treatment, but for now it's all about the driver resto with me.  There is no reason to go into hysterics about a car... not the mentality with a classic car for most, but i just want to drive it.  Not to worried about dings, and scratches.  They were built to be driven, not stared at.   Wink

Some more pics of the beast.  She arrived to  my delight around lunch time today.  The body isn't bad at all, very little rust.  Trans has a small leak, car runs/ drives great, shifts smooth... I was strongly leaning towards just shooting some primer to it, and nursing it along till winter, but two things happened today to tell me that was not the best choice of action.

1.  During the test run, brakes started acting up, ended up locking down the right front when i would press hard on the pedal.  Right Front Wheel cylinder  (or two) failed... crap.  Needs really to have the brakes done all around.

2.  The previous owner had told me that the car would start to run hot after a while... I was hoping for a clogged radiator.  No such luck.  I think it had something in common with the oily steam residue spitting out of the tailpipe.  Headgsket most likely .  Crap again.

Oh well, no biggee.  I think i will pull the big drivetrain stuff and fuel tank, and do a little body work at home while i hit the mechanical stuff at work.

The good news is the interior was incredible, and the contents of the glovebox made the deal even better.   Cool

Now to post some pics....
