In reference to my low power/overheating post I made earlier this week on my 1967 beetle- last night I started the engine in the lights out dark garage, I opened the engine hood- to my surprize there were quite a few random sparks flying around the bottom of the coil.  sparks jumping over to a burned wire connected to my carb sensor? (electric choke??)  This wire on the carb is melted and exposed wires showing -there is also a bare wire coming from the coil.  I had not seen these sparks in the day light- but are very obvious in the dark.  Could this possible be a major contributer to low pwer/overheating??
thank you all,
Kevin

I think we have a winner!
Replace all your spark plug wires and the wire to the coil and repair that burned wire (figure out why it burned) and you'll probably be amazed at the difference.
Pull the wires off one at a time and follow the same threading around the engine.
Match the one you pulled off with the closest size ones from the pack.
Good sparky wires have differing lengths for each cyl, the generic ones from Autozone will only have 2 sizes of wires. (the local AZ always has a set in stock and they have a lifetime warranty...)

They are OK to use, I have had a set of them for a few years, but there will be some extra wire to deal with.

We will all be interested in looking at this engine on Friday.

Yes and a nightmare when combined with a fuel leak,  repair the wire and new plug wires cap and rotor and possibly coil
