I was putting an alternator for PapaKoch's motor that we are putting in his '64 last night and I noticed that the pulley's front (front is front) side rubs against the alternator housing. Are there different types of pulleys? Why does this one seem to stick out so far in the front? Its the one that came with the kit from CIP1.

Thoughts?

Yes. Did this alt. come with the bushing/spacer ? The one that slides down the shaft and slides into the housing a bit.

If you figure this pulley thing out , make sure the alt.pulley is in line with the crank pulley. Did you install a "angle" fuel pump/ with short push rod ?  If you didn't you will have fun changing the pump if and it will, fails.

Yes there are different pulley "heights or thickness" I had to go thru about 4 to find one.  just lay they one a flat surface and use the shortest one

It does not have a spacer, but it looks like a case half washer fits! Might put the pulleys out of line but I don't know yet. It looks like I could grind/ file the back down to keep it from rubbing. I did find one reference where there were a few different styles made with different back plates. I'm just a little disappointed with CIP1's alternator kit since the pulley rubs and the shims don't fit the pulley very well.

I feel your pain. Don't you have a old gen/alt . I think the spacer off a gen should work. I put CIP1 right up there with GEX and the "new EMPI . I have had a few "kiss my butt and go to hell" with those guys.  There were a few different pulley from the factory but God only knows what you get from these "off the wall" junk dealers

I have PARTS of some older generator pulley's but thats only because other crap broke on them (the back half broke in two, leaving only the front part...). I'll see if I have any extras laying around.

I'm talking about the little dime size spacer ring on the shaft.

Look on the shaft right where it goes into the gen. casting. It about the same size as the opening. You may have to take the gen apart. They can be a little tough to get off. Be sure to take the woodruff keys out.

LOL. I can't stand CIP1.......Been there and done that, with a 12v conversion from those guys. I ended up using the mix match thing with the original gen. spacer and shims, because the ClownsInPractice1 kit shims and no spacer wasn't going to work. Somehow I got the 40horse hooked up with a good fit Chinese 12vlt Alt. that isn't rubbing the housing or throwing belts. I'm just waiting to see how long the unit lasts.lol I'm already looking for a Brasil made Bosch to replace it. I want buy another disc/conversion kit from them either......much worse than the 12vlt conversion.
